Ken Searcy | Teaching Bio

Ken Searcy brings over 30 years of studies and practical experience to his teaching practice. He has mastered multiple advanced hand techniques including the complete study of rudimental drumming, the Moeller method and well as hand techniques used in concert band and orchestra percussion. This allows him to tailor his teaching approach to benefit each individual student.

His teaching experience also includes summer camps, including the local Yukon Summer Music Camp where he has instructed both students and music directors in both jazz and classical percussion techniques. He has been described as “having the ability to observe someone’s playing and initiate improvement with a few well chosen words”. He also has marching percussion experience having written for and taught the Calgary Cavaliers Drum Corp drum line as well as marching himself during his high school concert band days.

Ken’s ability to read and write music and knowledge of computers has allowed him to create clear and effective methods for helping students to face the what is perceived as daunting task of learning to read music themselves with the ultimate goal being the ability to “teach themselves” with the ability to read music being an integral part. His studio is equipped with state of the art audio and computer equipment to provide written, audio and video examples of the latest educational materials.

His students range from younger students eager to get started to older students wanting to play drums for the first time to serious, dedicated students who are looking to master or take their drumming to the next level.

Ken is also experienced and available for questions or to assist with maintaining and repairing all types of drums and percussion equipment.
